Mending update

There are twelve squares on the quilt I'm mending.  I have so far finished repairing three of them.  At this rate, I certainly won't finish by the end of the week.  I'm not very fast at hand-sewing.  Still, I'm glad to be making progress!

The Pig: there's obviously a piece missing where his ear should be.  I'm going to have to figure out the proper pig ear shape to replace it. Any ideas what that shape should be?

The Cat: In addition to re-stitching the applique to the quilt square, I replaced the embroidery on the legs and eyes. You could see where it had been 'cause the fabric was less faded there.  Sadly, my embroidery skills just aren't as marvelous as Grandma's!

The Chick: All the embroidered bits were still intact for this one.  I just had to stitch down the applique piece again.

I also sewed buttons on two sweaters that I knitted last year (while pregnant) and put snaps on a little dress that used to have buttons.  I'll take pictures of them tonight and show you tomorrow!

  5. Oh wow, thank you for finding it for me! I have a bunch of craft books my grandma passed on to me, but that wasn't among them. I may have to go buy it off of Amazon.

Getting Ready for Creation to the Greeks and 1st Grade

The past several days post-Christmas have been spent prepping for our upcoming school year. We school year-round from January to December. This year our schedule is blocked off in 5-week chunks.  We will have five weeks of school followed by a week or two (or sometimes three) break. There are many, many reasons we keep this sort of schedule, but I'll save all that for another day. Since I am doing both Creation to the Greeks and First Grade from My Father's World this year, I had a little more work than usual to get ready. I Printed or Copied grid pages from both the CTG and First Teacher's Manuals to make my planner pages listed in the Teacher's Manual from Drawing with Children Science in the Beginning Notebook ( get it under Downloads from Berean Builders ) Proverbs cursive copywork for my girl to tagalong with her little brother English from the Roots Up worksheets ( download here ) 100 chart from back of Singapore Math 4A Home Instructor's Guide ...

{Book} Review: A Tale of Two Kingdoms

This time of year many people begin to celebrate the Advent of the Christ.  My kids love the activities, the calendar, the Christmas books, and the pageantry of it all. But yesterday I asked them why we celebrate Advent. Why is Christmas different from any other famous person's birthday? And what  was  the message the angels gave to the shepherds anyway? Our celebration of Advent is the simulation of the waiting, the longing for, the intense anticipation of the coming of the Messiah.  Christmas is more than just "Happy Birthday, Jesus." It's the fulfillment of that long-ago promise by God to send the Seed, a Savior to the world.  The angels didn't say, "Dudes, check out the cute tyke that was born tonight!"  No, they announced: Unto you is born this day a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord ! Babies are born every day of the year, but this was a special birth. This was the birth of the long-awaited Seed promised to Adam, the Messiah who cam...
