Family Fun: Fritz's, a Fairy Tale Village, and the Crayola Store

My sister and her fiance came to visit this weekend (hence, the sad neglect of my blog!). We had a wonderful time catching up and visiting Crown Center in Kansas City. My future brother-in-law loves trains like dogs love squirrels (have you seen Up?). So we stood in the long, wrap-around line at Fritz's Railroad Restaurant to have our meal delivered by train. (The shakes and onion rings are worth mentioning!)

Afterward, we took a stroll through the Fairy Tale Village.

Then I snuck in Chip's Chocolate Factory while the others went on to the Crayola Store.

All in all, a wonderful day!

Getting Ready for Creation to the Greeks and 1st Grade

The past several days post-Christmas have been spent prepping for our upcoming school year. We school year-round from January to December. This year our schedule is blocked off in 5-week chunks. We will have five weeks of school followed by a week or two (or sometimes three) break. There are many, many reasons we keep this sort of schedule, but I'll save all that for another day. Since I am doing both Creation to the Greeks and First Grade from My Father's World this year, I had a little more work than usual to get ready. Review: Seed Starting by Gary Emmett (an ebook)

As I've already confessed, I am a plant murderer . I have, however, had marginal success with container gardening. The past year or two I started seedlings with my dad, which means the kids and I dropped a few seeds in pots and my dad cared for them. Once they were established outside, I was able to keep them alive long enough to harvest a few peppers and tomatoes and have a pretty pot of flowers on my doorstep. (At least until a horrid heat-wave and drought came along and killed them all; it's hard to keep containers well-watered when it's that hot!)
